How They "Ace" Musical Theatre

Yesterday I spoke briefly with Smallworlds world renowned founder and director of The Royale Melody Theatre. A native to South East England, here’s what Ace Nyan had to say about his work thus far:

Eloise Bennett: How did you think up the idea for Smallworlds theatre?

Ace Nyan: Well, I’ve been a part of musical theatre since I was 8 and have had a deep passion. Considering I never saw it on here made me think it was time to introduce theatre back into communities I’m part of.

Eloise Bennett: What are your top, let’s say three, favorite musicals?

Ace Nyan: That’s so hard! Well… it has to be Phantom, Wonderland, and Carrie. All their music is incredible and I admire all their composers.

Eloise Bennett: How long does it take, an estimate, to create an entire show?

Ace Nyan: It depends, really. Writing a script can take up to a month, as our team submit their sections and I have to edit it to fit. Then there’s the makeup, costumes, designing sets, props, and backdrops from scratch, PLUS me creating entirely new soundtracks...Then the programming, dear god, the hardest. It can be a PAIN to get right. Once it’s done, we plan a schedule and organize the staff router and much more in-world preparation. So it can take up to a few months.

Eloise Bennett: Oh my gosh. A lot of work! You won the Best Fantasy SWOscar award this year, your first time entering? How did it feel to be recognized and appreciated by the Film community?

Ace Nyan: Actually, I did enter in 2015 and I obviously lost. I didn’t enter in 2016, but then I actually won this year! I never got much respect before that, I was looked down upon by some people. But I guess I rose above it and here I am! Kudos to my team who got us here!

Eloise Bennett: Well congrats! You’ve already produced a few shows, any big plans for the future of Royale Melody?

Ace Nyan: Well we have a lot of projects lined up, can’t wait to get started on them!
