Minimalism is the hot new design trend: bedrooms, dorm rooms, anywhere you’re living, there’s an article about making it minimalist. And who doesn’t love that idea: a spacious, clutter-free place to kick your feet up sounds like heaven to me! But how does one go about creating a minimalist look here on Small Worlds? It’s not as difficult as you think. In fact, to prove my point, here are five tips for creating a beautiful minimalist space wherever you call home.

1. Keep the neutral tones

A key factor of minimalism is using minimal colors - whites, greys, browns, and blacks. These are simple, and help bring out the clean lines of your space. You can’t go wrong!

Sadly, my place doesn’t have the kind of dark grey I want to put on the walls, but this light grey color, light wood floors, and white shelves help create the minimalist feel I’m looking for. Scroll through your space’s decor options and see what fits!

2. The green’s in the plants

Of course, everyone needs a little color in their life, and that’s where plants come in! Their bright green color acts as a perfect opposite to the cool, neutral tones of a room. Plus there are a ton of options when it comes to plants. Hit up the ‘plants’ section in the shop for a cool cactus or some bamboo to act as a natural divider. Or you can grab a marble planter (I mean, it screams minimalist) to get your favorite seeds growing and level up your farming skill at the same time. None of those float your boat? No worries - there are plenty of plant sculptures around; you’re bound to find one that suits your look. Plus no maintenance - what a deal!

3. Create a ‘center’

Minimalism can sometimes make you feel like there’s nothing left in your space, or that everything is spread too thin. Blank and used space needs to be balanced for minimalism to work. A great way to do that is to create a ‘center’ of the room, where the majority of furniture will be. This could be in the literal center of a room, or up against a specific wall. You can even ‘block’ the area off using rugs or decking.

4. Don’t over-clutter

On the complete opposite end of the last point, remember to keep decor to a minimum. That’s the main idea, after all - decluttering your space leads to decluttering your life and things like that. Luckily your room on Small Worlds isn’t like your real room, so you don’t have to worry about leaving clothes all over and that one piles of chargers for your electronic devices.

But Small Worlds does offer items that can be placed on tables and shelves. Though these seem like a great, inexpensive way to make your space feel more full, they can quickly pile up and look like a mess. Try to keep a few decorative items with a common color scheme to make your space work.

5. Add your own personal touches

Of course, sometimes achieving a perfect look means taking matters into your own hands. One of my favorite examples of this are picture frames and floor posters, which allow you to use photos from flickr in your space. These can really help make a minimalist look with cool patterns or beautiful landscapes (working in those greens again!). Also don’t forget our old friends, the sculptures. The ones I have in my bedroom were gifted to me from our lovely founder Percyy. I don’t know what they’re supposed to be (dining chairs?), but I do know they look cool, and their geometric shape and color is the perfect accent for my bedroom.

And there you have it; five easy tips to help you create the coolest minimalist looks. Take your newfound knowledge and get designing!
